On Sunday, 18th May 2008, the members of the Sutton Rambling Club headed for the attractive limestone dales country in the White Peak with Monsal Head as the focal point.

Monsal Dale Ramble

This will be a steady 12 mile ramble but with an optional shorter route in the late afternoon. . The ramble will commence at Monsal Head (grid ref SK 175715), the famous viewpoint overlooking Monsal Dale.

The first section of the walk follows along the attractive Monsal Dale by the River Wye enjoying interesting mixed woodland en route. We then cross the A6 at White Lodge and continue south along Deep Dale which will be resplendent with a million cowslips in full flower. Shortly after leaving the dale there will be a picnic lunch in the vicinity of the Magpie Mine.

In the afternoon we move eastwards across to the village of Sheldon originally a lead-mining area. There is then a steep descent back to the Wye river via Great Shacklow steps. This takes us into the attractive village of Ashford-in-the-Water with its pretty cottages and 14th century church.

There is the opportunity for a short break here before heading north across the fields to Monsal Head for a late afternoon tea-stop. The early evening section of the ramble heads across to the villages of Little Longstone and Great Longstone in a pleasant pastoral landscape.

Finally we head south past Cracknow Wood finishing at Bakewell ready for a6. 30 departure home.

The shorter option would be an amble back from Ashford-in-the-Water to Bakewell by the river Wye direct to Bakewell. This would give more time to compare the serenity of Ashford-in-the Water with busy Bakewell with its range of shops and cafes.

New members would be made most welcome and you would be able to enjoy a very popular attractive area of the Peak District with a choice of routes.

The leader of the ramble is Martin who can be contacted on 01623 513961.

The McEwens coach leaves the "Staff of Life" pub on Hack Lane in Sutton-in-Ashfield at 9.15 am and Bancroft Lane end, Stockwell Gate (near the Netto supermarket) in Mansfield at 9.30 am.
