On Sunday (21st) the Sutton Rambling Club continue their attractive series of summer walks on the northern fringes of the White Peak. The walk encompasses magnificent moorland, nature reserves, gritstone edges and the Derwent Valley.
It will be a linear route of approximately 11.5 miles with a shorter option in the late afternoon. The starting point will be on the A625 Sheffield to Hathersage road at the Blacka Moor Wildlife Trust Site(grid ref 283807). This is an inspiring start to the walk set in magnificent moorland containing 180 hectares of breathtaking scenery. The reserve has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) because of its important population of upland breeding birds, and is popular with walkers, horse riders and nature lovers. The first section of our journey heads south across moorland towards Owler Bar with a mid morning tea stop en route. The route then takes us south west by the disused Barbrook Reservoir and we continue on for a picnic lunch near to Ramsley Reservoir. This will be in an area managed by the RSPB and other organisations protecting various species of wildlife.
After this refreshing break we continue south across heather moorland hoping to get sightings of red deer. The terrain then changes as we walk along the gritstone Birchen Edge, a popular location for rock climbing. We enjoy the views from Nelsons Monument and the drop down to the Robin Hood Inn on the A619 for a mid afternoon refreshment stop. The final section of the walk takes us westwards along farm tracks and bridleways to the north of Baslow and finally on to the Bridge Inn by the River Derwent at Calver (grid ref246744). The coach will depart for home at 6.30 pm. There will be a pick up option in Baslow for those wishing to shorten the walk.
We continue to attract and welcome new members who can be guaranteed a day of healthy exercise, attractive scenery and friendly company. The McEwens coach leaves the "Staff of Life" pub on Hack Lane in Sutton-in-Ashfield at 9.15am and the Bancroft Lane End, Stockwell Gate (near the new Asda supermarket) in Mansfield at 9.30am. There are other pick up points en route. The fare is £9, accompanied juniors free. Although the club walks are very popular there is no necessity to prebook your seat on the coach.
