Derwent Valley Walk
This is a previous walk by the Sutton in Ashfield Rambling Club in South Derbyshire. Please click for details of the next walk or a walking calendar.
On Sunday 4th May 2008 the members of the Sutton Rambling Club enjoyed a scenic 8 mile ramble on the south-eastern fringes of the Peak District including the Whatstandwell, Brackenfield and Ashover areas.
The walk begins with a 5 minute stroll along the Cromford Canal from Whatstandwell and then moves north-east with a steady climb up to Wakebridge Farm. Along this section we can appreciate wonderful views of the Derwent Valley. We move along to the hamlet of Wheatcroft for our morning coffee break.
The morning is completed by continuing north-east past the Lindywaylane Lakes and on to Brackenfield for the lunch stop at the Plough Inn.
After lunch we head west and visit the local historical sites at Mathersgrave and also look out for the overgrown ruins of the local church from bygone days.We then head north to the beauty spot of Highoredish which is a good vantage point for beautiful panoramic views.
There then follows a steady descent past Berridge Farm where we will take our afternoon break. We then continue north through Ashover Hay and onwards to Walnut Farm to enjoy superb views of Ogston Reservoir. The walk then passes through the village of Fallgate and finishes in Ashover, the winner of England's Best Kept Village competition in 2006, at approximately 5.45 pm.
As always new members are most welcome and this would make an excellet introductory ramble .Although there are some hills it will be at a steady pace and you will get the benefit of picturesque views and convivial company.
