On Sunday (20th April 2008) the members of the Sutton Rambling Club will be heading for an enterprising walk on the north-west frontiers of the Dark Peak area close to the Pennines. This will be a ramble to savour enjoying picturesque villages, attractive valleys, the Huddersfield canal, mouth-watering ice cream and even a micro-brewery!

The outward journey will include good views of Saddleworth Moor and the surrounding countryside from the M62 and it will take us between 1.5 and 2 hours to reach our starting point-Brownhill Countryside Centre (grid ref 996064) Toilets available here.

We then set off on the ramble,a distance of between 9 and 10 miles heading in a north-westerly direction through the picturesque villages of Dobcross and Delph. (In the late 1700's 90% of the population was employed in the textile industry) On reaching Delph we will have a coffee-break after approx 1 hours walking.

The next section follows the footsteps of the Roman soldiers up the Castleshaw Valley as we enjoy good views and pass the site of the Roman fort which guarded this strategic route over the Pennines between Chester and York.
We then head east across to the village of Diggle where refreshments will be available in the Diggle Hotel. There is then a choice of routes to complete the walk.

a.   A 30 minute meander down the Huddersfield Canal in the Tame valley with the chance to sample Grandad Green's home made ice cream. The walk finishes at the little town of Uppermill which has a variety of shops and cafes.

b.   A higher level route taking in the Church Inn with its very own micro-brewery (real ale including Hopsmacker,Saddleworth and 5 or 6 other beers-reputedly at £1.50 a pint!) This option also finishes at Uppermill.

The departure point will be the Uppermill Swimming Pool car park (grid ref 003056). Estimated departure time 5.00 pm, arriving home between 6.30 and 7.00 pm
