On Sunday 23rd March 2008 the members of the Sutton Rambling Club enjoyed spectacular moorland scenery in an area to the east of Beeley and Chatsworth. The full walk will be a distance of 12 miles but there are two shorter options available in the afternoon reducing the overall distance to 10.5 miles or 9.5 miles.

The walk starts at Screetham Lane (grid ref SK 305656) and heads WNW to Flash Lane through Upper Dogkennel Plantation and across Big Bumper Piece (heather moorland) to Rowsley Park Road. We we then pause for a mid-morning coffee stop by Bond"s Quarries. Then onwards north and west to Fallinge Edge (south of Raven Tor) and descend a heather and boulder slope to a footpath that runs northwards alongside a wall as far as the Beeley road.

We then cross and take concessionary path NNE through Hell Bank Plantation, swinging west at fork to follow Beeley Brook down to Beeley village for our lunch stop (pub and cafe options available). This morning section is a distance of approximately 5.5 miles.

In the afternoon we leave from Beeley church car park and take the footpath NNE via Beeley Hilltop on to a track that emerges from Chatsworth near Park Farm. We then turn SE along this track and then eastwards across Beeley Moor to reach the S.E. side of Bunker"s Hill Wood up to the highest part of the walk (1125 ft) where we should be able to enjoy excellent views.

The walk continues by Harland Edge and passes close by Hob Hurst"s tumulus. From here we follow the track in a northerly direction with a mid afternoon break by an isolated barn (grid ref SK 277709). The track then veers ENE for a while before we leave it for a path on left heading north towards the A619 Chesterfield-Baslow road. The path then descends into a rocky gorge called Heathy Lee Brook and continues westwards past the pub and hamlet of Robin Hood. The walk finishes along a gentle track descending into the north end of Chatsworth park and following Bar Brook into Baslow.

We are planning for a coach departure time of 6.00 pm from Baslow (Nether End).

Chatsworth rambleThe first shorter option afternoon option will continue with the main party up to Park Farm but then head north along a track through the woods above Chatsworth House (pictured right) past the Hunting Tower and finish with a descent into Baslow.

The second and shortest option would head across riverside meadows to the Beeley Bridge entrance to Chatsworth Park. Then a gentle walk through the Park back to Baslow.

The leader of the ramble will be Peter who can be contacted on 01623 882515

New members are most welcome and will be able to enjoy beautiful wild scenery with choice of routes. There is no necessity to prebook your seat on the coach.

The McEwens coach leaves Langford Street end, opposite Asda in Sutton at 9.20 am and Bancroft Lane end,Stockwell Gate (near Netto supermarket in Mansfield at 9.30 am.
