Sutton in Ashfield Rambling Club
On Sunday (27th December 2009) the members of the Sutton Rambling Club will be enjoying a an easy 9 mile walk on the eastern fringes of the White Peak. An ideal early opportunity to walk off some of that Christmas fare and perhaps start an early New Year resolution to get more exercise!
The route will start at Clay Cross (grid ref 392635) and proceed west to the small hamlet of Newmarket and then south to Stretton Hall Farm. We then continue westwards past Woodhead Grange Farm and Eastwood Farm until we reach the hamlet of Fallgate. At some point we will enjoy a mid-morning coffee stop. The morning section finishes by heading north past Was Farm, up Gin Lane, by Overton Cottages and on to Ashover for our lunchtime destination.
Refreshments will be available here and there will be time to enjoy this village which is pleasantly situated amid rocky scenery and is proud of its Parish Church, completed in 1419 and containing several interesting features including a Norman font and a beautifully carved screen.
After this leisurely lunch break the ramble continues north east Farhill hamlet to Alton village. We continue north past Press Farm and Bolehill Farm skirting by a small reservoir. The last section veers north west past Stubborn Court Farm and we pick up our coach at the Red Lion Inn on Stone Edge (grid ref338672) for a 4.00 pm departure home.
As always new members are made most welcome and this ramble will be an ideal introduction to the club. We are seeing new faces on nearly every walk.
The McEwens coach leaves the "Staff Of Life " pub on Hack Lane in Sutton-in-Ashfield at 9.15 am and the Bancroft Lane end,Stockwell Gate (near the Netto supermarket) in Mansfield at 9.30am.There are other pick up points en route.
