Sutton in Ashfield Rambling Club
This page will be updated regularly with details of the next
On Sunday (13th December 2009) the members of the Sutton Rambling Club will be enjoying their annual Christmas ramble around the Crich area. This is always a very popular event and on this occasion it is advisable to prebook your seat on the coach and essential to prebook the lunchtime buffet.
It will be a very easy 5 mile ramble with the main emphasis, on this one occasion, on the lunchtime entertainment. The starting point will be at Whatstandwell just above the Derwent Hotel (grid ref 332543). Initially we head north alongside the Cromford Canal and then cross the first bridge and take a pleasant woodland path across to the hamlet of Wakebridge. We will then have a mid morning coffee stop before circling around the Cliff Quarry and making for the famous Crich Stand. There will be ample time to enjoy the extensive views and the opportunity to climb to the top of the tower if you so wish.
The tower was rebuilt in 1922 as a War Memorial to 11,400 of the Sherwood Foresters and stands 942 feet above sea level. The morning then finishes with a gentle descent into Crich village via road and footpath.
The "very long" lunch stop will be at the delightful Black Swan pub in the centre of the village. The highlights will be:
1. Group carols etc. sing along with piano and accordion accompaniment. Song sheets provided and everyone encouraged to sing and bring along a musical instrument. A wide range of music will be covered.
After lunch we walk through the attractive village and head back across field paths to Whatstandwell enjoying more views on the way. The walk will finish at the Derwent Hotel and the coach will depart at 4.00pm.
New members will be most welcome and this would be a great introduction to our friendly club.
The McEwens coach leaves the "Staff Of Life " pub on Hack Lane in Sutton-in-Ashfield at 9.15 am and the Bancroft Lane end,Stockwell Gate (near the Netto supermarket) in Mansfield at 9.30am.There are other pick up points en route.
