On Sunday (28th June 2009) the members of the Sutton Rambling Club will be heading for a particularly attractive area in the White Peak. This is definitely one not to miss with rich variety of scenery all day. The route will embrace the beautiful rhododendron and azalea woodlands around Errwood and spectacular and extensive views from Shining Tor. It will be a 10 mile ramble at a steady pace with plenty of time to stop and enjoy the surroundings.

Errwood Reservoir rambleThe walk will start at the southern end of Errwood Reservoir (grid ref SK 012747) and head through those lovely woodlands, past the ruins of a mansion and tiny circular chapel and on to the Shining Tor ridge. On the ridge we will take time to drink in the panoramic views across the Cheshire Plain including Shropshire,North Wales, Manchester, Staffordshire, Liverpool, Derbyshire and Lancashire.

Also look out for the Wrekin, the Roaches, Liverpool Cathedrals, Jodrell Bank and Kinder. On an exceptional day Snowdon and the Malverns can be seen. Shining Tor at 1834 feet is the highest point in Cheshire. We finish our exhilarating morning with refreshment at the famous Cat and Fiddle Inn, the second highest pub in the UK at 1690 feet.

River Dane walkIn the afternoon we continue across barren moorland moving south through Danebower Hollow before crossing the A54 and following the river Dane down to Three Shires Head. To finish we go around Turn Edge and make the steady "climb" up into Flash, the highest village in Britain at 1518 feet.

The coach will depart from Flash Village Hall (grid ref SK 028673) at 6.30pm.

We have been very pleased to welcome a number of new members this year. Do come along and enjoy wonderful scenery, healthy exercise and convivial company.

The McEwens coach leaves the "Staff of Life" pub on Hack Lane in Sutton-in-Ashfield at 9.15 am and the Bancroft Lane end, Stockwell Gate (near the Netto supermarket) in Mansfield at 9.30 am. There are other pick-up points available en route.
