On Sunday (19 October 2008) the members of the Sutton rambling club will be enjoying a choice of rambles in the beautiful and refreshing countryside around the Manifold and Hamps Valley areas in the southern part of the White Peak.
There is a choice of either a 9 or 12 mile walk. Both start in the grounds of Ilam Hall (grid ref SK 134509) and follow the "Paradise Walk" to the Boil Holes and take the second footbridge across the River Manifold. The route then passes along the footpath across the fields to the hamlet of Rushley. We then head north from Rushley Bridge past Castern Hall and by the Castern Wood Nature Reserve. There are wonderful views across to the Manifold Valley with rich autumn colours to enjoy. We continue north along the Manifold Circular Walk crossing Larkstone Lane and then taking field paths across to Wetton village, this will be the lunch stop for walkers opting for the 9 mile ramble.
Refreshments available in the village. At this point 4 miles will have been completed. The longer route continues north along the eastern flanks of Wetton Hill and then swings S. W. down a stream valley on to a path over Darfer Ridge leading down to Wetton Mill for the alternative lunch stop(cafe and toilets here). This will be at the six mile point for the longer route.
Finally we move south down Rocester Lane for several hundred yards and then take field footpath to our destination, the village of Waterhouses. The coach will pick us up at the car park (formerly site of Peak Cycle Hire) near the rear of the Crown pub. Toilet facilities available in the car park (grid ref SK 085501)
The McEwens coach leaves the "Staff of Life" pub on Hack Lane in Sutton-in-Ashfield at 9. 15 am and Bancroft Lane end, Stockwell Gate (near the Netto supermarket) in Mansfield at 9. 30am.
