Peak District Ramble - Deer Gritstone TrailGritstone Trail Ramble

On Sunday (7th September 2008) the members of the Sutton Rambling Club enjoyed a memorable ramble along the Gritstone Trail on the north-western fringes of the Peak District. The scenery will be spectacular amidst high level and exposed terrain. During the day, given fair visibility, you will have the opportunity to see Jodrell Bank, Manchester Airport and the Welsh Hills. Do bring your binoculars.

The walk will be at a steady pace covering a distance of 10 miles. The starting point will be Disley Railway Station (grid ref 845973) where toilets are available. The morning section of the ramble will take us south to Lyme Park where we will have a one hour lunch stop. Special features of this park include a medieval deer park (fallow and red deer), woods and moorland with breathtaking views from Lantern Folly. Refreshments available. We should reach this location within an hour.

In the afternoon we link up with the Gritstone Trail and head south with our next target being Sponds Hill with another chance to linger and absorb wonderful views. We then continue south and west along the trail where we will see the local landmark "White Nancy". Here there is a choice of a climb up to the summit or skirting around the edge. The walk continues south along the Saddle of Kerridge. The final section of the trail takes us through wooded valleys and attractive meadows until we reach the finishing point-Teggs Nose Country Park (grid ref 725948) at approximately 6.30 pm. There will be frequent coffee breaks and one pub stop during the afternoon.

New members are most welcome. This is a golden opportunity to enjoy a guided walk and see some of England's finest views. Only the Lake District could surpass them.
The leader of the ramble is Barry who can be contacted on 01623 621551 if you would like further information about this walk.

The McEwens coach leaves Langford Street end, opposite Asda in Sutton at 9.20 am and Bancroft Lane end, Stockwell Gate (near Netto supermarket in Mansfield at 9.30 am.
