Bonsall ramble in White PeakOn Sunday (27th July 2008) the members of the Sutton Rambling Club embarked on another absorbing ramble focusing on the limestone country and villages in the south-east of the White Peak area. This will be a steady walk of approximately 11 miles with several breaks en route. We start from Cromford (grid ref 225569) initially heading north up onto Harp Edge and then along to Upperwood before heading west to the interesting old lead-mining village of Bonsall at the head of a limestone valley. We will enjoy our mid-morning break here having covered approx 1.5 miles.

Onwards then along a section of the Limestone Way past Luntor rocks and reaching the village of Winster with its late 17th century market house. The morning finishes at the village of Birchover where we will take our lunchbreak for a picnic, cafe or pub refreshment.

In the afternoon we will continue west to Robin Hoods Stride with its two tower-shaped rocks spanning a distance of 10-15 yards. There will then be the opportunity to explore an old hermits cave called the Cratcliffe Hermitage. This cave dates back to the 14th century and is reputed to be have been a shelter for travellers on the Portway, one of Derbyshire's oldest trackways. We then rejoin the Limestone Way and move north to Youlgreave and then, a bit further on, enjoy splendid views of Lathkill Dale with its abrupt slopes. Having crossed the Dale we go through Over Haddon and finish at the attractive market town of Bakewell (grid ref (220685) for a 6.30 departure home.

We are always pleased to welcome new members.Enjoy healthy exercise in attractive scenery with friendly company. There is no requirement to pre-book your seat on the coach.
